School History

Edison Elementary School

Named after Thomas A. Edison, this brick school, located at 22nd and Clay Street was opened in the fall of 1931. It really is the combination of two schools, Garfield and Jackson, both of which were in the area and were closed when the school opened. It is a beautiful three-story brick structure whose grounds occupy an entire city block. Its first principal was Francis Burris who came over from the Jackson School. The structure is still in use today.
